This is a 5 day series of emails all about dealing with hyperthyroidism. Graves’ ophthalmopathy is a potentially serious eye disease that can occur in people who have hyperthyroidism because of Graves’ disease.

Graves’ disease is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, causing it to overproduce thyroid hormone. In Graves’ ophthalmopathy, the same antibodies that attack the thyroid also attack tissues behind the eyes.

Fortunately, while Graves’ disease affects approximately 1 in 200 people, Graves’ ophthalmopathy is rare, occurring in just 16 women and 4 men out of every 100,000. Smokers and people who are exposed to second-hand smoke are at a higher risk of the condition than non-smokers.

While you can’t do much to avoid this condition, quitting smoking and avoiding second-hand smoke can lower your risk.
